Before Pregnancy

Did you know that the health of your baby starts before you become pregnant? Eating a well-balanced diet before you conceive is one of the most important things you can do to optimise your fertility and the health of your baby. You should also plan when you wish to conceive, and whether you may need a preconception check-up with your healthcare professional to address any individual concerns/medical conditions that can affect your potential pregnancy. Also think about your lifestyle as a whole and make any changes that may be required. This may mean giving up smoking and reducing your alcohol intake while increasing your intake of fruit and vegetables as well as regular exercise to boost your chances of conception.

A healthy baby will also depend on your partner’s health, so encourage your partner to join you in your preparation plan. This will bring the two of you closer together and maximise your fertility. 

Preparation for conception can take several months. It takes time for your body to reap the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Also, if you are in the process of detoxifying your body, for instance, from smoking or the use of alcohol, it also takes time to become accustomed to this change. But remember, it is a change for the better.
